Every public Optimus appearance, and what was actually shown

Tesla has not published a demo by demo disclosure of which appearances were autonomous versus remotely operated. Here is the public record, in order.

SECTION CHECKED 2026-08-28
October 2024
"We, Robot" event Teleop suspected
Tesla's first major public reveal event for the current Optimus generation. Among the appearances outside observers believe showed signs of human teleoperation, per general reporting on Tesla's demo pattern.
July 2025
Tesla Diner appearance Teleop suspected
A public appearance at the Tesla Diner, also cited among the demonstrations outside reporters believe relied on, or showed strong evidence of, human teleoperation.
October 4, 2025
Kung fu demo, Tron premiere Musk says: AI driven
At a Tron premiere event with actor Jared Leto, Musk stated the demo was AI driven, not teleoperated: "Optimus was at the Tron premiere doing kung fu, just up in the open, with Jared Leto. Nobody was controlling it." Reporting describes the underlying training as imitation learning from a human instructor in a motion capture suit, not live remote control during the performance itself.

Miami "Autonomy Visualized" fall Teleop suspected
An Optimus unit dropped water bottles and fell backward while interacting with attendees. Immediately before losing balance, its hands moved rapidly toward its head in a motion resembling someone removing a VR headset, widely read by observers as evidence a remote operator had just taken theirs off.

Earnings call: 2025 production target missed Missed target
In January 2025, Musk said "several thousand Optimus robots will be doing useful things by the end of the year." On the Q4 2025 earnings call, held January 28, 2026, he walked that back, admitting the robot "is still in the R&D phase" and "not in usage in our factories in a material way." Tesla's related January 2025 target of roughly 10,000 Optimus units built in 2025 was also not met.
August 27, 2026
Production begins at Fremont Confirmed
Optimus entered production at Tesla's Fremont factory, in the space vacated by Model S/X. Units are earmarked for Tesla's internal "Optimus Academy," factory tasks and training, not commercial deployment.
Unconfirmed

A widely repeated claim of "1,000+ Gen 3 robots on the production floor" has circulated online since around January 2026. It cannot be traced to a primary Tesla source, and it directly conflicts with Musk's own January 28, 2026 statement that no robots were doing useful work "in a material way." We do not treat this as fact.

Unconfirmed

Current unit count on the Fremont line: not disclosed. Tesla has not published how many units are physically on the line as of August 28, 2026. We are not going to guess a number here.

Forward targets on the record None of these have happened yet. Treat every one as a stated goal, not a confirmed outcome.
